Chapter 285
In the end, adding and subtracting, all that remained was disappointment.
Casually stirring the pot, Mason asked, “You were only twenty years old back then. Why did you think of getting married so early?”
Celeste, not wanting to mention the Campbell family’s complicated matters, joked, “I hadn’t been married before, so I wanted to see what marriage was like.”
Mason laughed, “How is it?”
Calmly, Celeste said, “It’s not great. Single life was better.”
Not wanting to continue the topic, Celeste asked him, “Mr. Fletcher, do you have a girlfriend?”
Mason calmly replied, “With my body, It’s not a good idea for me to find a girlfriend.”
Celeste thought he meant his previous illness and said, “Aren’t you feeling better now?”
Mason didn’t answer but slightly pulled up his sleeves, and Celeste suddenly went quiet.
His forearm had a large burn scar. The skin looked horrifying as if there was a tumor spreading along his arm.
Celeste paused for a moment, then looked away.
Mason calmly pulled his sleeve back down, and smiling, said, “It scared you, right?”
Realizing her rude response, Celeste quickly apologized, “I’m sorry…”
“It’s fine,” Mason said nonchalantly, “I would be scared seeing it myself.”
After a while, Celeste whispered, “It’s not scary, but rather unsettling…”
She hesitated, speaking softly, “It must have been painful…”
Mason’s movement paused.
He took the pasta out of the pot, drained the water, and placed the pasta back on the stove, gently swirling a piece of butter.
After a while, he said, “It’s been too long. I can’t remember clearly.”
Celeste replied, “It’s for the best. The less you remember, the less pain there is.”
She suddenly realized that every time they met, Mason’s shirt was always carefully buttoned at the top, and his sleeves were always covering his
wrists.
Although the weather in J City wasn’t hot, the temperature still wasn’t low around noon when the sun was shining upon them directly. During their last meal at the school entrance, she was sweating from the heat, but Mason’s whole body was still tightly wrapped up.
She thought it was because he was a lawyer. She didn’t realize that he was covering up the scars on his body.
She shouldn’t have mentioned girlfriends, or Mr. Fletcher wouldn’t have brought up his painful past.
By this time, Mason had already cooked the pasta. He put some on a plate, and gave it to Celeste. “Try it.”
Celeste tasted it and immediately gave him thumbs up, “Super delicious.”
Mason smiled and said, “Let’s go to the dining room.”
Celeste was sincerely praising Mason’s cooking skills, which were indeed excellent. His pasta was much better than her own cream pasta. Celeste gobbled up all the pasta on her plate, showing her mad respect for Mason’s cooking skills.
Once Celeste finished eating, Mason got ready to clean up, but being all embarrassed, she didn’t wanna trouble him, so she went and washed the dishes herself in the kitchen.
Stepping back outside, it was already pitch–black. Mason said, “I guess the show’s over; everyone’s probably at the deck now. Let’s join ‘em!”
Celeste nodded in agreement.
Just as they left the room, Celeste spotted a surprise visitor and frowned, saying, “What on earth is she doing here?”
