Chapter 36

Ella’s POV:

Jake says curiously “I didn’t know you had a guardian”

“I didn’t. Linda just started today. She and Stephanie will be taking shifts” I said while taking the seat opposite from him.

“Is everything ok?” he asks in concern.

I exchange looks with Linda. Should I tell him? Well, since we are going to see each other almost every day, he kinda deserves an explanation.

“Don’t worry it’s just a precaution. I was attacked by someone at my old pack, and we haven’t been able to identify him yet” I said nonchalantly, trying not to make a deal out of it so they don’t catch how much it actually terrifies me.

He paused for a second to process what I said “Well, you don’t have to worry while I’m here, I can take whatever comes through that door.”

I heard Linda snort from the sofa. Jake turns around slowly and looks at her.

“Something funny?” he asks with raised eyebrows.

“You don’t need to protect her while I’m here” she answered in a c*oc*ky tone.

“That’s what I’m saying. You don’t need to stay while I’m here, you can take a break for three hours to do whatever it is you used to do before you became her guardian”

“No way she is my responsibility so I’m staying. Plus, did you even finish your training? I mean what level are you at exactly?”

“How about you decide what level I’m at for yourself?” he asks with a challenge.

She smiles and raises one eyebrow before answering “I don’t know, I wouldn’t want Ella to end up without her tutor for a couple of days”

I watched their interaction without interrupting. While it seemed like they were bickering, it also seemed like they were flirting with each other. I wasn’t sure which one was happening right now.

“Or maybe you’re afraid I might actually beat you” said Jake while turning around to face me again.

He didn’t give her a chance to reply as he quickly said to me “Let’s start our session shall we?”

I nod sheepishly and open my notebook. I saw Linda narrow her eyes at Jake’s back, then turn her back to us and lay on the sofa with her hands behind her head.

When our time was up, Jake got up, gave Linda a nod with a playful smile, then left the room. As soon as the door closed, she turned around and said to me “Your tutor is some kind of an arrogant jerk. Isn’t he a little too young to be a tutor anyway? How old is he?”

I smiled and said “He is nineteen, and graduated last year. Joseph said he volunteered as a tutor at his school for two years, so he kinda has the experience.”

“Nineteen! Well, that explains a lot actually. He hasn’t grown up yet apparently” she said in a dry tone.

“How old are you Linda?” I ask curiously.

“I turned twenty-nine a few weeks ago”

I stare at her with wide eyes “twenty-nine! You look no more than twenty,” I said with surprise.

She smiles at my reaction “Yeah everyone tells me I look too young for my age.”

We stayed in my room the entire time before heading off to training at four.

I told her everything about me and my life before coming here, excluding my abuse and my father’s ident*ity.

When I told her about my attack, she was so shocked that I managed to survive all those serious injuries. I told her that the alpha donated his blood to me.

“I wouldn’t be surprised that he personally gave you his blood. He is a great and kind person, I’ve known him even before he became an alpha. He’s always willing to help others” she said proudly.

Then, she asked me about the reason that guy attacked me and tried to K*ll me.

“I mean you just went into your room and he just started attacking you out of nowhere?” she asked in confusion.

Well, in order to answer her, I’d have to tell her about the backyard confession, and my father. I didn’t want to lie to her either. I wanted to become friends with her. I didn’t just want her to be my guardian. Friends shouldn’t lie to each other.

She sensed my discomfort, and lightly touched my shoulder with her hand.

She said with a smile “It’s okay. You don’t have to tell me if you feel uncomfortable about it, I totally understand.”

I smiled at her, thankful for her kindness.

She was a very sweet girl with a very sad story.

When she turned eighteen, she found her mate; who was twenty-one at the time, and got married two months later. They were so happy together, so in love. He was a guard who fought in battles and secured the borderline to protect the pack. She ended up being a guard like him, so they were always together. A few years into their marriage, they found out that he can’t have children of his own. They tried different treatments but nothing was working. He tried so hard to push her away from him, to get her to move on and start another life with someone who can give her a baby, a family. But her love for him was far greater than any baby.

She fought for her marriage until she won, and they stayed together through it all, until the day he got murdered by hunters who attacked the border about a year ago. While his wish for her was that she moves on with her life and finds a happy family for herself, she never got over him. He was her mate after all. No man can ever measure up to him. No love can ever live up to the way she loved him.

Her story got me sobbing so hard, she ended up consoling me instead of the other way around.

After I calmed down I asked her curiously, “So when someone looses his mate, he really can never fall in love again?”

“Not necessarily, I know many people who lost their mates or rejected them, and ended up having a very happy life with someone else. It depends on finding the right person I suppose. But for me, it seems impossible”

I don’t know why alpha Klaus popped into my head at that second. He was too young to never be able to fall in love again after Kate. But Linda’s answer gave me some hope. Maybe, he will eventually end up with a happy life after all. I wished the same for Linda too. While Jake seemed fascinated by her, she was annoyed by him. There was also the age difference. Still, love shouldn’t have limits or rules.

I was the last person to judge or hope, my love life was not only empty, but non-existent.
