The old lady seemed to be in a dilemma, “Skyler is meticulous and thoughtful, while Valeria pays more attention to the big picture and makes things grand. I like both. This 80th birthday might be the last big celebration in my life. You’re both not young anymore and have been worrying about your kids all your life. It’s time for you to enjoy some peace and quiet, and you shouldn’t be so busy anymore.” The old lady looked at Liam and his wife, “Celeste, why don’t you take charge of this year’s banquet?”
Celeste?!?!
Everyone was shocked when they heard this.
Valeria was the first to object, “Mom, there will be so many people at the banquet. Young people don’t have enough experience, and they might mess it up and make a fool of themselves.”
Skyler, for once, agreed with Valeria, “Valeria is right. Although Celeste is my daughter–in–law, she is indeed too young. Young people lack experience and may overlook things. If it were a family celebration, it wouldn’t matter how it was organized, but there will be so many people on the day of the banquet. What if something goes wrong, how can she take responsibility?”
Kaylee also said, “Grandma, she can’t even organize my brother’s birthday properly. How can you entrust her with such a big event like the birthday banquet? Aren’t you just asking for trouble?”
Liam’s face darkened, “It’s the elders‘ discussion, is it your turn to speak? Don’t you know the rules?”
Kaylee glared at Celeste and closed her mouth in anger.
Celeste didn’t dare to say anything.
She was innocent but suddenly got involved in this matter. This wasn’t a good thing for her.
The old lady was very shrewd. Both were daughters–in–law, and no matter who she chose, the other would be unhappy. Whoever she chose would be accused of favoritism. How could the old lady choose between them? She couldn’t afford to offend either side.
So, this hot potato was thrown to Celeste.
“You were young once too, weren’t you? You should give young people more opportunities to practice. Nobody is born knowing everything. Celeste, would you like to give it a try?”
The old lady looked at Celeste.
Although she asked this, her eyes seemed to say, “don’t you dare reject this.”
Celeste had no choice but to bite the bullet. After a while, she said, “Grandma, I’m afraid I won’t do a good job.”
“Young people shouldn’t be afraid of making mistakes. You need to keep trying, and then you’ll know what’s right. If you don’t understand something, you can ask Skyler and Valeria for help. They’d be happy to teach you.”
Valeria could see the old lady’s attitude and knew there was no hope for her to organize the banquet this year.
She glanced at Skyler and found her looking even more upset than herself.
This made her feel a little better. Although she was disappointed, at least Skyler didn’t benefit from it. The fact that the old lady would rather entrust the banquet to Celeste than to her showed that her position in the old lady’s heart was not much higher than hers.
Moreover, with this task given to Celeste, Skyler wouldn’t let her accomplish it smoothly without having to lift a finger herself.
Thinking of this, Valeria said, “Since you’ve said that, how can we not support you? The kids are all grown up, and there are some things that we really need to let go. Celeste, if there’s anything you don’t understand, just come and ask me. If you need help, you can ask Wesley too. The ultimate goal is to successfully hold the birthday feast.”
Wesley smiled and said, “I’m at your service anytime.”
Now that Valeria’s family had made their stance clear, if Skyler objected again, her intentions would be too obvious.
She never expected that after trying so hard to guard against Valeria, the good fortune right in front of her would be snatched away by Celeste.
