But there were some things you can’t keep running from.
Celeste was stress eating and munching away nonstop.
Liam, looking at her, said, “Enough with the grub.”
She froze, swallowed what was in her mouth, and retorted, “This is the food you brought, now you’re telling me not to eat?”
Liam passed her a glass of water, “You’ve been chowing down a lot. If you keep going, you’re gonna feel sick tonight”
He paused. “Are you stuffing your face to avoid talking to me?”
Was her act that obvious?
She hung her head, took a sip from the glass, and stayed silent.
She was already full. If Liam didn’t stop her, she might eat until she was about to burst.
“Letti” Liam said. “There’s nothing between me and Sydney. I’m nice to her because she’s useful to me. She can help someone who’s really important to me. I’ll introduce you to them when the time is right. This whole thing is complicated, and I don’t want you tangled up in it.”
He reached across the table, gently brushing her hand, then brought it to his lips for a soft kiss, “As a husband, I might’ve dropped the ball. But it’s my first time at bat. I don’t have a playbook. You’ve gotta cut me some slack when I screw up. I… I don’t want to lose you.”
Celeste felt a lump in her throat.
For a moment, she wanted to burst into tears.
But she held them back
The problems between them weren’t that simple anymore,
They had their fights, but most of the time, she was happy.
Liam hadn’t cheated. Even if his love wasn’t deep, he never let her down.
If only that were the only issue.
Celeste clenched her lips, pulling her hand away
“Liam, does your Grandma know. She paused, That I can’t have kids?”
He stiffened
She forced a laugh, “She doesn’t know, does she?”
His lips trembled, but he didn’t respond.
“If she knew, would she still let you marry me?”
His jaw tightened
This was the most crucial issue he’d been avoiding
“You’re the heir to your family. You can’t be childless forever. Your grandma wouldn’t stand for it.”
“She doesn’t know about my condition, so she still hopes we can patch things up. But what if she finds out? How long can you keep it under wraps?
“Even if you can fool her for now, what if she learns the truth one day and hurts herself out of anger? What would you have me do then?”
His voice choked up, I can live without a child”
She gave a sad smile, “People will change. You might not want kids now, but what about later?
What if you regret it a year from now, two years, ten, or even twenty? What if, when you see other happy families, you start regretting your decisions in your youth?
Would you blame me for not having your own child? And I’d be living in guilt for not being able to give you one. We might end up hating each other.”
Celeste continued, “I’m not done with Skyler I have to get my revenge. You can’t just stand by and watch, right?”
She took a deep breath, “So let’s call it quits. Let’s end this while we can still look at each other without resentment.“
