Chapter 37 – It Had Been Too Long Since I Had You

“Will… will you come back to visit me again?” I stuttered. “I enjoy having you… having you here with me.” He froze.

For a moment, he just looked at me. Then he arched an eyebrow, as if he couldn’t imagine that his company was pleasing.

“Please… I feel safer when you’re around,” I added.

My confession came out of nowhere. I immediately realized that, subconsciously, I had wanted to say it. But when I actually spoke the words aloud, I realized that it wasn’t my place to even think about it. Ethan didn’t seem to mind, though. His fingers took my chin and lifted my gaze from my hands to his eyes. Then, slowly, he leaned down and captured my lips with his own.

The kiss was soft and gentle.

If I could have deepened the kiss, I would have, like a greedy child wanting more of a good thing. I wanted more of him, always— but at the end of the day, he wasn’t mine to have more of.

As his lips left my own, I saw a dark, hungry swirl of emotions lingering in the depths of his eyes that made me want more.

“I miss you-” I whispered. It was so low that I could barely hear it myself.

My face was burning. I couldn’t believe I said that!

But I did miss him…

It had been a while since he touched me in the ways only he could, and I couldn’t deny that, in my dreams, I longed for him.

A hint of surprise flickered on his face. Then his eyes narrowed slightly, I sensed something dangerous, as if I was his prey.

Within a split second, he was upon me. I gasped.

Our hands moved frantically as his lips caressed mine. I couldn’t contain the moans that left my lips as I was quickly bared to him. The soft and gentle touches of his hands upon my naked body drove a lust through me that I didn’t understand.

Ethan let his lips travel down, wrapping around the e*rect bud of my b*reast, and as his tongue swirled around it, it shot pleasure straight to my core.

Slowly, inch by inch, he slid himself deep inside me. His thrusts were not rapid and hunger-driven like in the past. Instead, they were slow and passionate, as if he didn’t want this moment to end, either.

Gradually my hips met his with every thrust he made, and a low growl left his lips in pleasure as I moved slightly, deepening the touch that he gave me.

The pleasure built up at a rapid pace as I felt myself ready to explode around him.

“Ethan-” I moaned as I closed my eyes, arching my back. “I can’t hold on much longer.”

A growl of satisfaction left him. “Then don’t… come undone for me.”

At his request, I didn’t hold back. The o*rgasm that racked me caused him to release his own and spill his seed deep inside me as his knot held us in place.

I was his in more ways than one, and moments like this made me question whether or not he cared for me more than he claimed.

We laid there panting, a smile across both of our lips as he leaned down to kiss me again.

“It had been too long since I had you.” His whispered confession made me melt against him.

“I am always waiting for you,” I whispered, a blush spreading over my face.

A chuckle left his lips at my response before he leaned down, kissing my forehead in an affectionate manner.

I was glad, so glad to have this time together, but it soon proved short-lived, as a knock on the main door caught both of our attention.

“Alpha, you have a message,” came a guard’s voice from the living room, causing Ethan to slowly slide from me with an annoyed expression.

“What is it?” Ethan’s voice rumbled as he pulled his pants back on.

He looked at me, a signal to cover myself; I didn’t hesitate and pulled the cover over myself modestly. Ethan opened the door only slightly to speak to the guard on the other side, making a point to block his view of me.

I couldn’t hear exactly what they said, but I watched the muscles ripple in Ethan’s back as he tensed, and then pinched the bridge of his nose, letting out a sigh.

“I’ll be there in a moment.”

With those words, Ethan closed the door, keeping his back to me. He hesitated before turning to face me. I knew what was coming. No matter how much I wished he could stay, it wasn’t possible.

Matters of the state would always come first to him, and that was something I would have to learn to accept.

“I have to go to the library to meet with Romero now,” he replied softly as he moved to gather his clothing and get dressed again. I wanted to tell him that he didn’t need to explain to me where he was going, but I didn’t, because I love hearing his voice.

I nodded my head. “Of course.”

“…But I will be back later,” he continued.

I looked up at him in disbelief. “You will?”

I wasn’t expecting him to tell me as much after everything that had happened. I had thought he had had his fill of what he wanted, and it would be a while before I saw him again.

There was really another side of him that was so different from his usual demeanor, and it continually shocked me.

“Behave, and rest,” he murmured. “The baby needs it, too. We must do what’s right for him.”

He leaned over towards me with his shirt finally buttoned, and rested his hand upon my stomach. His eyes stared hard at the child still growing within my stomach. “The child will be strong… I can feel it.”

“He will be like his father.” I replied warmly, watching as Ethan’s eyes rose to mine. There was hesitation there, but as he leaned over, he brushed his lips against mine, kissing me softly.

“Hopefully, he will always have his mother’s kind heart.”

With his statement he rose to his feet, and walked towards the small table that had food and water on it. Ethan had a bad reputation, but I knew had a kinder heart than he wanted to admit. I saw more and more how he tried to hide who he was from others.

Carefully pouring a glass of water he turned towards me and held it out, “In time we shall see what the kid will do.

His words shocked me. I wasn’t sure if it was something he had meant to say, but it melted my heart. “Life is only ten percent what happens to us and ninety percent how we handle it, Ethan.” I replied softly, “You are going to be an amazing father. I know it.”

The struggle within him was evident, and I saw the hesitation matched with a smile that didn’t quite meet his eyes. Stepping closer to me he leaned down kissing the top of my head, “get some rest Rosalie.”

Nodding my head I knew the conversation was done. A soft smile crossed my lips, and I watched as he slowly straightened himself once more and then made his way out my door.

As much as I was happy about what he said, a part of me was hurt by the way he had initially stated about this being about the baby. I knew it was, but something inside me knew that his words held a different meaning.

I knew making sure that Ethan’s heir came into this world healthy and safe was my task. But at the same time… I wanted him to care for me as well.

To care about me for my sake, and not just because I was carrying his child.

Every time I thought things were changing between us, he would say or do something to remind me that I was merely a breeder— that I only held my position in his life for as long as I was useful to him.

Those reminders were the ones that kept me up late at night and made me shed tears for a man I would never be able to have the way I wanted- for a life I could never have.

“Why me?” I whispered.

I prayed that one day, I would wake up, and Ethan would tell me he cared about me. That I was more than just his breeder- that I was everything he wanted.

But those were the hopes of a foolish woman.
