Chapter 13
After the conflict had ended, the red-haired thug was eventually handed over to the police.
Still feeling frightened, Olivia quickly sent Branden away as well.
She turned anxiously to Jack and said, “Just now, the red-haired thug said Joel is the kingpin of Dynea, a man with significant influence. Blaine likely authorized him to send people to look for trouble, and now that you have injured one of their men, you should find a place to hide.”
Jack smiled at her flushed face and said, “There’s no need to hide.”
Olivia was nearly frantic, yet Jack still smiled at a time like this.
Regret filled her mind now. If she had known it would turn out like this, she would not have rented a boyfriend just to save face. If she had attended the event alone, she would have been mocked by Blaine and his friends, but she could have endured it and moved on.
Instead, she was now constantly on edge, fearing their revenge and dragging Jack into it.
Jack spoke up, “Don’t worry. This incident started because of me, and I’ll handle it.”
He only wanted to teach Blaine a lesson. However, he had forgotten that Olivia was different from him. Unlike him, Olivia could not deal with that man, nor did she have someone to support her.
Facing Blaine, she was just as insignificant as Blaine was to himself—a mere ant.
Olivia looked at Jack in surprise, then sighed bitterly. “You don’t even have a place to live right now. How will you handle it?”
It appeared to her that he could not handle the matter.
A faint smile appeared at the corner of Jack’s mouth, but he said nothing.
Olivia took him to a convenience store in the neighborhood and bought some necessities before heading home.
As soon as she arrived home, she received a call from a colleague.
“Olivia, do you know that Mr. Chaney is dead?”
For a moment, there was a buzz in her head. Olivia did not know how to react and even thought she had misheard. “Wait, what did you say?”
“Mr. Chaney is dead. They found his body in an alley on his way back. You argued with him this morning, and he was found dead in the afternoon. Didn’t anyone contact you?”
Olivia’s face went pale instantly, and she swallowed hard, trembling as she said, “Are you joking with me?”
“Why would I joke about something like this? If you don’t believe it, go to his place and see for yourself.”
Olivia fell silent, and her colleague probed, “Olivia, does it really have nothing to do with you?”
She now realized that her colleague suspected her. Still, given the coincidence, it was sound for one to have suspicions.
“It has nothing to do with me,” Olivia said before hanging up the phone.
As she turned her head, she met Jack’s gaze. He was somewhat smiling as he stood by the bathroom door. Olivia wondered if he had overheard the conversation earlier. Feeling guilty, she looked away and urged, “Go wash up quickly.”
Although she did not do it, she had fought with Mike. Therefore, it was reasonable that people find her suspicious.
Jack looked at her thoughtfully for a moment, nodded, and said, “Alright.”
Olivia weakly walked over to the couch and sat down, taking out her phone to search for related news online, but she could not find any information about Mike’s case. She even started to suspect that her colleague was just teasing her.
Despite her conflict with Mike, she also wondered why no one came to her.
Jack emerged from the bathroom, and when Olivia heard the movement, she stood up and walked over, saying, “Why did you take so…”
But the rest of her words got stuck in her throat when she saw Jack coming out with only a towel wrapped around his waist. He had just finished showering, his hair hanging messily on his forehead and steam still rising from his body.
She never knew he was so tall and slender. With his clothes off, his figure was surprisingly good, and he even had abdominal muscles.
Jack approached her with a joyful expression, asking, “Do I look good?”
Suddenly, she came to her senses, and her face flushed. She covered her face in a pretentious manner. “You, why are you not dressed!”
Olivia wondered why Jack was so open-minded.
He replied, “I do not have any clothes.”
She forgot that he had come without bringing anything, and then she wondered if he would have come out naked if she had not bought him this bath towel.
With that thought, Olivia peeked through the gaps between her fingers, trying to sneak a glance at his towel.
Before she could get a good look, an enlarged, handsome face suddenly blocked her view. It seemed as though his eyes saw through her fingers and met her curious gaze.
“I can take it off for you if you want to see it. Why so sneaky? I’m not stingy,” Jack said teasingly.
Olivia quickly dropped her hand, her face turning beet red, and she pushed him away. “You… you go away!”
She wished she could disappear from sight, having been caught while trying to sneak a peek. She was about to run away, but Jack grabbed the back of her collar, and his voice came from above her head. “You are the Peeping Tom here, and yet you want me to go away?”
She hunched her neck, mustered up the courage to pry open his large palm, hurriedly rushed into the bathroom, and closed the door.
He watched the fleeing figure of the little girl and chuckled lightly.
Olivia turned on the faucet and splashed her face with cold water, finally calming herself down. She could not help but disdain herself deep down.
She thought, “Oh, Olivia, you’re really hopeless! It’s not like he was looking at you. Why are you shy?”
As she raised her head and saw her reflection in the mirror, her eyes dimmed instantly as she could faintly see the traces of a light kiss on her neck.
She shook her head to get rid of all those messy thoughts, and then she picked up her toothbrush to brush her teeth.
When Olivia finished washing up and came out, there was no sign of Jack in the living room. She rushed into the bedroom and glanced around, but Jack was still nowhere to be found.
Olivia wondered where he had gone.
