Chapter 20
“Did you take the wrong pills or something?”
Ever since Mason walked in, he hadn’t stopped smiling. Nicolas had known him for years and he’d always been a pretty serious guy. It was his first time seeing him act so goofy, and it felt pretty weird.
Mason leaned against a nearby table and smirked, “I just met a girl on the rooftop.”
“Really?”
“She thought I was taking pictures of her, so she snatched my phone and gave me a piece of her mind.”
Nicolas squinted, “Why do I feel like you’re actually quite happy about it? Did you fall for her or something?”
As Mason just kept smiling. Nicolas got curious.
Nicolas, Liam, and Mason had grown up together. The Francis family was slightly less powerful than the Fletcher and Reed families in J City, and both Mason and Liam were the only sons of their respective families, raised to take over the family business.
But a few years ago, Mason got sick and took more than two years to fully recover. After that, his parents seemed to have loosened up on him, allowing him to do whatever he wanted, as long as he was happy.
Over the years, he had dabbled in music, painting, skiing, racing… He was interested in so many things, but he never showed much interest in women. His love life was as clean as a blank sheet, and Nicolas even suspected his sexual
orientation.
So now that he heard Mason was interested in a woman, how could he contain his curiosity?
“How’s that girl look? Pretty?”
Mason recalled Celeste’s appearance when he met her.
Her half–dried long hair rested on her shoulders, her eyes slightly lifted as she gazed into the distance. Even in the dim light, her features were stunning, and she could take people’s breath away even without any makeup on.
Of course, the way she snatched his phone was even more memorable.
“Very pretty.”
“What’s her name? Didn’t you at least get her WhatsApp number?”
“I didn’t get the chance,” Mason sounded a bit regretful, “She seemed to have a someone in the hospital. She took a call and then left in a hurry.”
Nicolas sighed, “What a pity.”
Not long after, his phone rang. As soon as he answered, he heard Liam’s cold voice, “Did you die?”
Nicolas didn’t miss a beat, “Yeah, I’m dead. Come collect my body.”
“Quit the nonsense and come out.”
As they left Mercy Hospital, Liam’s car was waiting for them across the street, its engine was still running.
They got in the car and realized Liam had driven himself there.
“Where’s Owen?”
“Off work.”
Nicolas found it odd, “Your assistant gets time off? Aren’t they supposed to be on call 24/7?”
Liam didn’t bother responding to Nicolas’s smart mouth. He glanced at Nicolas’s bandaged hand and asked Mason, “Are you okay?”
Mason smiled, “I’m fine, thanks to Nicolas blocking that glass for me. Otherwise, I might not have been so lucky.”
Both of them were just unlucky. As they were leaving the hotel, the glass door shattered just as they pushed it open. Luckily, they dodged in time, and only Nicolas’s hand got injured.
Liam started the car and said, “He was trying to have you protect himself, but he misjudged the situation.”
