Chapter 59
Immediately, an intense battle happened as both of us became busy with a group of wolves.
To my surprise, Benjamin had already knocked two rogues out. He was actually on his third victim before a few minutes had even passed. However, there were too many rogues to be beaten. The final thing was that both Benjamin and I wouldn’t be able to win this battle. Not only that, we both knew about
that.
As for me, I had two wolves to fight against. I was able to hold my own against them pretty well, so far. None of them had thought that i was able to fight this well for an underage girl as it clearly showed by them. They moved by thinking that I would never be able to keep up with thim. However, they were very wrong on that.
“Winona!” Benjamin shouted.
“I can hear that there are more rogues coming! We have to go now!”
I knew that the boy was right. We had made a miscalculation by underestimating how big this cave was. With the number of wolves that were here, it seemed possible that the cave expanded out more than we could see here. The most likely possibility was there were hidden tunnels somewhere that would explain how they would come out of nowhere. Hence, the best option for both Benjamin and I was to run:
However, Benjamin suddenly shouted in pain. When I wanted
to turn to see what happened to Benjamin, the two rogues I was fighting against didn’t even let me take my eyes off them. They seemed to be determined to finally get a hit on me as their frustration had only been growing the entire time I was able to dodge their attacks. However, I didn’t have to wait long in order to see whether Benjamin was fine or not.
It was because I could hear the sound of someone shifting almost immediately. After that, the sound was then followed by a repetition of whimpers, howls, growls, and tearing flesh. In fact, there was a lot of flesh tearing. Meanwhile, I quickly uncovered my knife as I was waiting for the right moment that I knew would come to me. To my joy, Benjamin didn’t make me wait for long.
The hugest black wolf I had ever seen then came jumping out of nowhere and tackled one of the two rogues away from me. After that, the wolf snapped the rogue’s throat as a final blow. Although I had only ever seen Benjamin’s wolf a few times, it always impressed me all the time. It was the same like any other Alphas’ wolves.
The second rogue instinctively turned his attention to Benjamin in order to help his friends. However, that was a huge mistake. Immediately, I moved so fast to kick that rogue to the ground. After that, I pinned him with my legs before I instantly stabbed the silver knife into his chest. As I finally got exhausted, I leaned back to look around me. It seemed that Benjamin had murdered the entire cave floor because the corpses around started to shift back to their human forms. Nevertheless, it was a total massacre.
However, I heard Benjamin who then whimpered. It caused my attention to focus on him because I knew what he was trying to say. Previously, he had mentioned that there were
more rogues coming here. It was a reminder that we didn’t have much time to leave. I nodded my head to tell him that I got it as I looked down to get my knife back, only to find the wolf had reverted back to his human self underneath me.
Immediately, I could feel my whole body freeze up when I saw who laid there. However, it had to be impossible, right? Surely, it was someone who just looked similar. It was because the rogue who laid beneath me was someone that I was very sure known as Doctor Andrews. He was the future head pack doctor that would replace my mother one day.
While Benjamin was barking out loudly beside me, I couldn’t even understand what he wanted to say because of what I was seeing. It definitely didn’t make any sense to me. There was no way that Doctor Andrews would become a rogue. Two years from now on, he was supposed to be a doctor in our pack. This person had to be someone else. It might be his brother or another relative. Or, perhaps, someone unrelated at all. I just couldn’t see clearly in the dim light or with the dirt that covered his face.
However, Benjamin then suddenly pulled my shirt to his mouth as he started to drag me away from the body before I even had a chance to retrieve my dagger.
“Fine, fine!” I finally responded to him as I started to gain my composure back.
After that, the man managed to drag me for a couple of feet before the hard, stony ground cut my legs enough to piss me off. I stood up as fast as I could. Even though I was still shaken, I was able to make it the rest of the way outside by running back into the forest. It was unlikely for them to waste their time to chase us, but both Benjamin and I kept running
no matter where. Throughout this entire time, I followed Benjamin as I trusted him to know the way back even if all the way looked the same to my eyes.
Indeed, it was truly cool to see him in so much control. Or, perhaps, it was just that both Benjamin and his wolf were both in harmony at this very moment. Nevertheless, it was still impressive because most people would take at least a month to begin moving so fluidly in their wolf forms. However, I couldn’t help but notice he was limping slightly on one of his hind legs when I checked him. I assumed that was the reason he cried out before.
Thankfully, it didn’t take us for long to get back to the car. I immediately panted as hard as I could. In fact, I was now running out of breath because I had been running this entire time. When I looked up to see Benjamin, I found out that he was staring at me by the car. He almost looked expectantly.
“What?” I asked between my breaths.
The boy just pointed his nose toward the car trunk, then pointed back at me. It seemed that he had a spare change of clothes in there. He clearly didn’t want to shift before me because that would mean that I would see him naked.
Out of all the crazy shit I had just seen, Benjamin’s bare nakedness was by far the least of concerns we had. Besides, it wasn’t even a new thing for me. It wasn’t like I had never ever seen his whole body without any fabric before in my previous Tife. However, I guessed he didn’t know about that. So, I just exhaled quickly for one last time as I was mildly frustrated before I was going to open his trunk for him.
Then, that boy kept gazing at me until I walked around to the
front part of the car to give him the privacy he wanted. It only took a few minutes for him to shift back into his human form. But I could see that his mood became as gloomy as his wolf’s fur. It might be meant to me because of what happened in the cave before.
“We have to be quick,” he told me as he jumped back into the driver’s seat.
“They’ll be clearing the entire place out before we get back.”
At least, both of us agreed on that problem.
Benjamin immediately sped the entire way until we made it to the closest patrol tower. However, his prediction had come true. By the time the patrols and us got back to the cave, all the rogues had left and managed to take most of their belongings with them. Even all the bodies Benjamin amassed had already been removed very quickly. The only things that remained were the larger furniture.
Given only the hour, it was very impressive because they managed to go within that time limit. However, this only told us that they surely had another shelter nearby. There wasn’t any possible way for them to move that many people and dead bodies over an extended distance without leaving a single trace or track.
The search then continued for the rest of the day. It also ended up expanding out to the entire forests nearby. -Nevertheless, the patrols didn’t end up finding any rogue.
For now, the trail was completely gone.
